President Don Fipps says he always has a back-up Rotarian of the Day if he needs one- his wife Donna Fipps. Given the very special birthday we were recognizing, Donna gave a brief history of some birthday traditions. Credit the Egyptians for celebrating birthdays in the first place; the Romans for celebrating the birthday of every man (women finally got to celebrate their birthdays in the 12th century); Greeks and their god Artemis for lighting candles on birthdays; Germans and their Kinderfest for bringing a cake to put the candles on; and Pillsbury and their doughboy for making cakes simple to make.
